As we wade through the daily news regarding the sexual assault and harassment of women we need to rid ourselves of misconceptions that have traditionally overshadowed the heinous acts that women experience at the hands of men whose main problem is that they have very low self-esteem, resulting in the belief that that they can only feel powerful and get sexual gratification from someone that is their victim.
Sexual assault and harassment are forms of violence based on gender inequality which has resulted in the traditional belief that women are the weaker, inferior and submissive species that are supposed to comply with men’s demands, urges and misguided sense of power.
SEXUAL ASSAULT AND HARASSMENT IS NOT ABOUT SEX: IT IS ABOUT POWER.
Historical proof has shown that mentally disabled women, old women in nursing homes, pre‑teen girls, women in wheelchairs, as well as sweaty slaves in cotton fields have been victims. Harassment and abuse has never been just about attractive young women.
Dirty men are equal opportunity deviates who have no demarcation lines.
This dastardly act continues, because it is rooted in fear.
As more Sisters show that they are no longer living in fear, it is imperative that we arm ourselves with knowledge about the erosion of women’s rights which has lead to unequal pay for equal work, the increase in the number of Single mothers, the legal systems re-victimization of female victims and the negligence of police communities to take women’s complaints more seriously.
It is everyone’s responsibility, especially men, to break the code of silence which allows other men to treat their daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces and co-workers as objects to be debased and treated as objects for men’s gratification.
